Using Social Bookmarking to get Backlinks and Free Traffic

One of the fastest and easiest ways to drive traffic to your website or Hubpages is through social bookmarking. That is the reason Hubpages makes it available to you for every hub you create. It works!
There are many more social marketing or sharing websites available to you. One of the most effective sites I have found so far is called socialmarker.com. This site allows you to add a widget to your toolbar and anytime you create a hub, or visit a site you think is cool, you can add the page to 32 different social bookmark sites in less than 15 minutes.
This is a huge timesaver for anyone who does a lot of article writing, blogs and fresh content websites. You can imagine how much time it would take to visit 32 individual bookmarking sites, login, fill out the forms to submit your article or hub. Socialmarker cuts that time down to approx. 15 minutes or less.
What socialmarker does is pre-populate all 32 sites with the info about the site you are submitting. This includes title, url, tags and description. Initial setup will take a while as you will be required to register at all 32 sites. This will take a few hours. Believe me it is worth it! If you use this site on a daily basis you can explode your traffic and your adsense and affiliate income as well as sales on your website.
Imagine what you would accomplish by getting 32 fresh backlinks to your pages everyday (assuming you have a fresh hub or blog post each day). I regularly use this tool and have gotten pretty decent Google rankings as a result. I also tripled my Adsense income once I began using the site.
Bookmarking Buddies
Another great way to drive free traffic to your website is to use a buddy system or group marketing. Marketing buddies agree to social market each other. This is a form of joint venture.
Let's say we formed a group of 5 individuals who are bloggers or hubbers. Each time one posts fresh content the others agree to social bookmark the pages. This means instead of the 32 bookmarks you would submit yourself you now get 160 bookmarks for each page you publish. It would take you a long time to get 160 backlinks out there on your own. Group marketing makes sense.
Join a Group
If you are interested in joining a social bookmark group just say so in your comment below so other hubbers can contact you. You should also say how many you would like in your group and be prepared to commit the 15 minutes per person to make the group work. I usually set one evening per week to spend on group marketing. It doesn't HAVE to be done daily just as long as it is agreed upon with your group.

If your content is worthwhile it can explode your backlinks AND your traffic. Just be original with your content and make your headline and description make readers want to read more.

Thanks ImYoYo. :) Yes, you will need to register with each social marketing group the first time you use it. This will take the better part of one evening but it will be well worth it in the long run!

I am glad you like my style of teaching. I do believe in sharing information free of charge if you found it free of charge yourself. Don't get me wrong LOL I like making money as much as the next person and have sold over a quarter million dollars of product online in the past 3-4 years in my niches. What I don't believe in is charging for every tidbit of info I pass along. Especially with stay at home Moms. They have a hard enough go of it as it is and like most families there is not alot of spare cash. If there was, chances are they would not be trying to make money online! That goes for both men and women. When I do offer products for sale you can be assured it either cost me money to purchase or develop and I feel it is a necessary part of your online business or I would not be recommending it and I think that is why I am successful. People who have gotten to know me know they can trust what I recommend because I have given them great value for no charge first. :) The biggest mistake any marketer can make is presenting a sales pitch on the first or second contact without building a relationship with their potential customers first. Especially if you are selling the same product that a gazillion other marketers are also flogging.

I've read that this free traffic you are talking about is quite worthless and you get only a ton of bounces.
What is your experience and what contains the landing page you're directing the traffic to?
This is not the same as an automated submitter. This is a way to get a URL of a legitimate website noticed and your page rank in search engines improve through the organic back links created. The only way you would get an increase in bounces would be if people clicking on the links had no interest in your products. Social bookmarking does not work that way. Your "landing" page should be your website, not just a squeeze page.
It's obvious that the landing page should be the website, my question was related to the type of content. For example, for traffic exchanges it's better to show a very short squeeze page because those visitors are NOT willing to spend too much time visiting your website. Their main purpose for being there is getting credits. Following the same logic, what it's better to show to a visitor from a social bookmarking site? What they are looking for? Entertainement or what?
What I've read and I also noticed is that there are a lot of bounces because indeed people are not interested by the website despite they've clicked on the link. This is caused mainly because those social bookmarking sites let your "news" be placed under very few options of topics. If you add your "news" to a not very related section (because you CANNOT do otherwise), then the traffic is quite untargeted. That's why the bounces I guess.
You should not have to do anything different with your website to promote it in social bookmark sites than you do to promote it to search engines. Your most compelling text or information should already BE on your first page of the site or promoting it will be a waste of time anyway. Your description for social bookmarking should be enticing but at the same time "real". You will only get bounces if your bookmarking descriptions make promises your site can't live up to.
Another point to make also is that if your bounce rate goes up AND your Adsense income also goes up and IF your main reason for marketing your page was to increase your Adsense or affiliate program then I would not consider an increase in bounce rate to be a failure.
So you should submit to SB only sites where you don't sell anything. (Adding AdSense on a page where you're selling your own goods/services is a DEADLY mistake for your business)
So this is the type of content a website should have in order to work with SB: bla, bla, bla, AdSense, bla, bla, bla, AdSense. People using such networks are not buyers anyway, but they click on AdSense ads and there's where the income is coming.

NO! That is not what I said at all. Social bookmarking has put 3 of our marine canvas websites on the first page of google and we definitely sell product!
Adding Adsense on a website that sells product is NOT dealdy. It just makes good business sense.
And you a dead wrong if you assume SB communities are not buyers! Actually it has been recorded that social networking members are 19% MORE apt to buy online than any other group.
Wow! So you prefer a visitor to come to your site, click on an ad and earning you a few cents instead of buying a product whose price is definitely higher!? I am online since many years but I never heard about such strategy!

LOL you are very naive if you think your customers are not going to check out your competition. Buyers today online are not impulse buyers. IF your product is good and IF you have taken the time to make sure your website content and adcopy are high quality then you should not have to worry about bounce rate.
Puting Adsense on your website gives you the opportunity to gain income from customers as they exit your page....and they DO all exit at some point.
Competition in any business is healthy but if you do not have any faith in your website content or your products then you are probably best to stick with what you know about.

Before leaving your hub, here is an advise for the time when you'll grow up: never ever help your competition. Even if some of your prospects may find your competitors, only a newbie can place ads for his competitors. Open your eyes and look at the real world: no one is placing ads for the competition. Why do you think this happens? Because all businessmem are NAIVE? You're funny!
:) I guess my six figure sales every year for the past 4 years of my own products kind of rules out your "newbie" theory. Your inexperience and lack of knowledge of Web 2.0 concepts speaks for itself. Continue marketing with old techniques with your head in the sand and you will continue to receive the same results. You must keep up with the internet users or you WILL be left behind.
If you were satisfied with the results of your own sales (and I HAVE checked out your website to know that you are pushing email advertising; which by the way is a dieing market) you would not be reading my post in the first place. But you would know this if you had been following the latest trends. LOL

Have you noticed that any social networking sites are more effective/beneficial than others (other than the biggies like Stumble and Digg?) I'm thinking about the time it takes to sign up for all 32 - If you had to pick just 10 or 15, which would you choose?

It would depend on what your niche market is. Out of the 32 there are some that are specialized for things like marketing only or tech only. Newsvine does not allow you to promote your own website but if you write legitimate news or newsworthy articles it is a good one.
I would highly suggest you invest the time to register for as many as possible as they really are all valuable in the long run as far as search engine placement and back links go. This is just a one time investment of time and your business should be worth that to you. Once you are registered the social bookmarking will be about 20 minutes a day so that is easy and the benefits are huge.

Great post! But there's something I need to clarify. If I want to get links focused to my home page, I guess I could only submit my domain to around 32 social bookmarking sites right? In order not to get banned for spamming, I've read that we are advised to bookmark a domain only when there's updated content.
So let's say I never plan to update the content of my home page domain since It's going to be a set-it-and-forget-it adsense website, does that mean that I can only submit my home page domain only once those 32 social bookmarking sites? This in return means that I'll only get an extra 32 links for my home page which isn't really much.
Is there a way around this? If I submit the inner pages of my site, then does it also increase the links (or search ranking) to my home page? Thanks for your time

Well, I have to say it is a big mistake to never update a website. You will never make much in Adsense that way for one thing. And for another, you will never gain any ranking in search engines with a stale site lacking new content.
There are ways of adding fresh content to your website automatically though so it will still be a "set it and forget it" type of site and because you are getting new content regularly you can continue to social market the same site.

This site offers a wide range of services from free to paid so you can start out free and upgrade to paid as your websites start paying you. BUT, be sure to watch the video tutorials to find out how to use the automation properly.

excellent post and i use this site for bookmarking all my business and blog posts and it works great
I have a couple of Hubs, but was disappointed when they mostly showed up as nofollow links. Ever since then I have been wary of writing Hubs and have been more witing posts on Amplify and Posterous. Even Squidoo links don't all show.
I have also found a lot of the social bookmarks don't show as backlinks, even those that are dofollow.
What's up with that?
